The Conga Lounge

So yesterday Andrew and I were walking around Oakland in this incredible heat wave we’ve been having, thinking about how much we needed a frosty beverage.  As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but upscale wine bars and sweltering coffee shops.  Then, shimmering in the heat like a mirage, there it was: a sign pointing to a tiki bar on a second-floor walkup over a pizza parlor.

Thank you, tiki gods, for directing us to the Conga Lounge.  And thank you, Liz, for taking pictures of it after we called you and made you join us for drinks.

As you can see from the above photos, the Conga Lounge has its decor down pat.  They also played a lot of Martin Denny on the sound system, a major plus.  This, however, is clearly the bar’s standout piece:

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better red light-up moai.

Speaking of moai, I like the Conga Lounge’s tiki mug very much.

The drink has a lot of cranberry going on.  It’s pretty good.  Also very boozy.

After cooling off in the Conga Lounge, we all went out for deep-dish pizza at Zachary’s.  I call that a day well spent.  The lesson: when you need it, tiki will come to you.

Next time you’re on your way to either Seattle or Portland, there’s a Tiki Bar in the sea-side town of Cannon Beach, called Castaways Tini TIki Hut. I’m not much of a fan for tiki, but I thought you might be interested.

So how did you rate this tiki bar?
